Apostilling an HMRC Self-Assessment document for use abroad

HMRC self-assessment documents - including self-assessment tax returns, statements of account, tax calculation summaries and income confirmation letters - are occasionally required in apostilled form for overseas purposes. The situations that most commonly give rise to this requirement include overseas residency applications and Golden Visa processes where proof of income and tax compliance is needed, foreign property purchases requiring financial documentation, and banking applications abroad that ask for authenticated evidence of UK tax status.

HMRC documents bearing official marks

An HMRC document that carries a wet-ink signature from an authorised official, or an official seal or stamp, can be submitted directly to the FCDO for apostille. The FCDO authenticates the wet-ink signature, seal or stamp on the document. The apostille is physically attached to the back of the original.

Printed or electronic HMRC documents

The majority of modern HMRC correspondence - including self-assessment summaries, tax calculation notices and online statements - is issued electronically and does not carry a wet-ink signature or seal. Where the document does not carry verifiable wet-ink marks, it must first be certified by a UK solicitor or Notary Public before the FCDO will accept it. The solicitor examines the document, confirms it is a genuine HMRC-issued record, and applies their wet-ink signature and official stamp. The FCDO then authenticates the solicitor's certification.

What the apostille confirms

The apostille confirms the authenticity of the wet-ink signature, seal or stamp on the document. It does not verify the accuracy of the tax figures or make any statement about the applicant's financial standing. The receiving authority abroad uses the apostille to confirm that the document originated from a genuine UK government source.

Translation where required

Many overseas authorities - particularly in non-English-speaking countries - will also require a certified or sworn translation of the HMRC document alongside the apostille. For countries outside the Hague Apostille Convention, embassy attestation is also required after the apostille.
