Years of research, rigorous examination and academic commitment go into a UK doctorate. When the time comes to use that qualification overseas - whether for a faculty position, a research post, a visa application or professional registration - it is only natural to expect the process of having it recognised to be straightforward. In practice, there are several steps involved, and knowing them in advance makes a significant difference.
Start by confirming what the receiving institution requires
Different institutions and authorities abroad have different requirements, and it is always worth confirming these before doing anything else. Some will ask for an apostilled original certificate. Others will accept a certified copy. A number of countries - particularly in the Gulf and parts of Asia - require embassy attestation on top of the apostille. Establishing this at the outset saves considerable time and avoids the frustration of having to repeat stages.
Why your PhD certificate cannot go straight to the FCDO
UK university degree certificates, including PhD documents, are issued by the awarding institution rather than by a government body. Because they do not carry a government signature that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) can independently verify, they cannot be submitted to the FCDO directly for apostille. The document must first be certified by a UK solicitor or Notary Public.
Some Universities can help at this stage
A number of UK universities will issue a certified letter or transcript confirming the award directly, which some overseas authorities accept in place of the original certificate. It is worth checking with your university registry whether this is available and whether the receiving institution would find it acceptable - particularly if your original certificate is unavailable or has been damaged over time.
When Embassy Attestation is also needed
For countries outside the Hague Apostille Convention, the process does not end with the apostille. The document must then go through embassy attestation - an additional authentication step carried out by the relevant embassy or consulate in London. This is common for destinations including the UAE and parts of South and Southeast Asia. The time and cost of this stage varies by country, so build it into your planning from the start.
